Greetings Archery Enthusiasts,
I'm happy to say we had our first "Impromptu for You Saturday" and although we were a small group of 4, it was still a really fun time. Firstly, I would like to welcome Sarah a new member to our merry archery midst. She has never done archery before, but was looking for a new sport to take up and her mother recommended archery. Way to go mom! ![]() Saturday started off beautiful and sunny and I made it to Penn Station just in time to meet Sarah and catch our train. Great luck was on our side because not only did our train get us to Hicksville early, we caught a cab within 3 minutes of getting to the cab stand. When we got to the range the junior league was already leaving so, once again we had the small room all to ourselves. I got Sarah set up with a compound bow, with low enough poundage to have her focus on form. After giving her the basic pointers I had her shooting but there was a serious disconnect between the set of her pins and where she had to aim to touch the blue or red from just 5 yards. At first her aiming problem seemed symptomatic of me having incorrectly identified her dominant eye. However, when I took a good look, I realized she was closing her dominant eye to focus on the target, which is common when your dominant eye is not your strongest eye. As soon as she corrected that, she began to group wonderfully. Very soon after David arrived and spent some time implementing some pointers Ralph gave him, including getting comfortable with the adjustments Ralph made to his bow to correct his reach. I had spent the morning modifying my sight, so he and I spent some time doing some tuning. I wasn't pleased with how my sight was now set up, but it wasn't a huge issue that stopped me from practicing. Mark showed up and I headed out to start practicing on the 20 yard line. I want to try my hand with a lens in my sight and one of the many helpful archers at the range offered me his 2X to try out, but unfortunately it didn't fit my modified sight and it is clear I'm going to have to bit the bullet and purchase a new sight set up. Dang, that's going to be a $200 investment. I gave Mark a hand by filming his shooting form and considering he practices twice a week and is ordering a DVD on back tension, I suspect he'll be tearing up the gold in the next competition he gets into. Ladies and gentlemen, that's what I call a solid day of shooting and I'm happy to report Sarah says she had a great time. Thanks again David for giving Sarah and I a ride to the station. This Saturday is another day at the range and I hope to see many of you who we haven't seen in forever at the range. Please take a moment to RSVP . Cheers and here's hoping I see you at the range soon! Deidre |
